As per the census of 2006 the population was around 4,830 inhabitants. Five years ago its population was around 4,770 inhabitants. This reflects that the increase in population isn’t very big (1.2%).

This small town is the major gateway for the very famous Great Northern Peninsula. The town itself is located in Division Five of the province. It is actually the presence of Trans – Canada Highway in its proximity which increases its economical importance. Most of the trade around this region is conducted via this huge highway.
It was 1925 when a huge hydroelectric plant was started on the nearby River Humber. The major purpose was to provide power to the newly made pulp and paper mill in the Corner Brook region of Newfoundland and Labrador.
