Plovdiv is the second largest city in Bulgaria and one of the oldest cities in Europe. The city is the administrative center of the Plovdiv province and it is the primary educational, transport, economic and cultural center of the region of Thrace. In addition to that, Plovdiv is one of the most prosperous and most cosmopolitan cities of the country. It is located in the southern area of the province near the Maritsa River and Rhodope Mountains.

Plovdiv is one of the major international hubs so getting into the city is easy. The city has a small airport, the Plovdiv International Airport, which is situated southeast of the city. Meanwhile, tourists can also utilize the airport in Sofia and from there; they can take a bus to get into Plovdiv.

Another way to get into the city is by railway. Plovdiv has three train stations which are Central Railway Station, Freight Station, and Trakiya and Filipovo Station. Railways connect Plovdiv to other cities in the country. There are also train rides that travel to and from Istanbul and the trip takes about 11 hours.

The city has several major motorways. These roads connect the city to the rest of Bulgaria and plenty of European countries. Plovdiv has three major bus stations which are South Station, North Station, and Rodopi Station.

There are several means of transportation that can be used when exploring the city. Commuters can ride a bus, taxi or trolleybus. The downtown of Plovdiv also has a huge pedestrian zone.

Plovdiv has a temperate climate that is influenced by the Mediterranean Sea. It is characterized by tremendously hot and dry summers along with very cold winters. The hottest month is July when the highest temperature averages at 36 degrees Celsius. On the other hand, the coldest month is January with an average of -3 degrees Celsius. The annual precipitation in Plovdiv measures at 550mm. The wettest month is June while the driest month is August.

Plovdiv is regarded as one of the cultural centers of the country. One of the best events taking place in the city is the Plovdiv International Fair which takes place every spring and autumn. This is the oldest and largest international trade fair in Bulgaria. Another event of Plovdiv that is worth witnessing is the International Chamber of Music Festival which takes place in June. This festival is a gathering the most prestigious and famous Bulgarian musicians and composers.
