The city is located in the central northern part of Bulgaria, in the Danubian Plains, only 170 miles away from the Varna and 170 km away from the capital city of the country, Sofia.

The general aspect of the region in which Pleven is located is of a plain area surrounded by medium height limestone hills. Due to the area’s average elevation of only 116m and the immense surrounding landmass, the city has a temperate continental climate with four seasons. The summers are hot and scarce in rainfalls while winters are very cold and snowy. The best periods of the year to visit this city are autumn and spring when it is not too cold or too rainy.

The city is crossed by the small Tuchenitsa River, tributary to the Vit River that flows nearby Pleven.

The city has few indigenous plant and animal species due to intensive agriculture that is practiced here, Pleven being located in one of the most important agricultural regions of Bulgaria. The waters of the Tuchenitsa River house several species of fish, frogs and the fresh water turtle.
