Goiania travel guide

Goiânia is the largest city and the capital of Goiás (a state in Brazil). Goiânia also happens to be the largest city of Central – Western Region within Brazil. There are eleven cities in Brazil that have more inhabitants than Goiânia. The current population of Goiânia is estimated to be 1.25 million. The population of the metropolitan area of Goiânia is around 2 million.

The average temperature of Goiânia is around 22 degrees Celsius. The dry season of Goiânia occurs between May and September while the rainy season occurs between October and April. Average rainfall in this period is around 1,520mm.

The area on which Goiânia is situated happens to be extremely fertile. The land is crossed by many rivers (like Meia Ponte River) and the fertility of land was an important reason that led to the government of Brazil establish the city of Goiânia in that region. Goiânia is spread over an area of approximately 700 km².

The first few buildings of Goiânia were designed by the famous designer Atílio Correia Lima. He took inspiration from Art Décor for the design of these buildings. Most of the buildings of Goiânia were built between the years of 1940 and 1960. These buildings now come under the Artistic Heritage and the National Institute of History. Around 22 monuments and buildings come under this heritage. These monuments have become important structures for the government of Brazil as they attract many tourists every day.

One infamous incident of Goiânia was named the Goiânia accident. It took place in 1987 when heavy radiation came out of an old hospital (which wasn’t under any use). This radioactive contamination caused many deaths and many humans suffered from radiation poisoning. The effects of that accident are still visible amongst those who are born in Goiânia.

Goiânia started with the vision of improving the economy of Brazil. The vision has been more or less successful. Various industries are located in and around Goiânia but the largest share of profit for Goiânia comes from agriculture which thrives in the city due to the fertile land on which the city was built. After agriculture comes the motor industry. Reconditioning of motorcycles, repairing them, and the buying / selling business of these machines is very famous in Goiânia.
