Belo Horizonte travel guide

This southern city of Brazil is the capital city for Minas Gerais state of Brazil. Belo Horizonte is also famous by the name of Beagá which is derived from the initials BH. This shorter name Beagá is mostly used by locals while referring to their homeland. With over five and a half million inhabitants in the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte, this city has the third highest metropolitan population of Brazil. The local city population is around three million inhabitants.

Initially Ouro Preto was the capital city for Minas Geras and it was the year 1890 when a new city was planned as per modern standards and then constructed. This city was named Belo Horizonte and was given the tag of capital city as it had all the modern amenities which Our Preto never had.

The olden days Brazilian culture and design can easily be found in this city as the initial design of this city was highly influenced by the culture of Brazil during those years. Pampulha Complex is one such monument which is worth watching and which has many stories attached to it. Somewhere you will get the feeling that Washington D.C. was used as the reference city while designing the new city of Belo Horizonte.

This capital city is spread over an area of around two and a half meter square and the most important part is that around 900000 meter square of this huge land is still forest. Also there are multiple parks to favor the environment and the collection of these parks in and around the city gives the city a very beautiful look. One such famous park is Mangabeiras which is located around 6 kilometers from the city of Belo Horizonte.

The city is famous for its educational institutions and students from the rest of the country flock the city to pursue higher education. The city of Belo Horizonte has three famous universities. Multiple sports stadiums help the students take some time of to watch various sports that are organized in these stadiums.
