Mons History

After the fall of the First French Empire in the city, William I, king of Netherlands, greatly strengthened Mons. When Belgium secured its independence in 1830, Mons was one of the dismantled cities. Its walls were torn down to make way for the construction of new boulevards and other city developments. Mons quickly progressed because of its coal mines and the Industrial Revolution. read more

Mons Sightseeing

Museum of Fine Arts. The museum was constructed in 1908 and was later recreated in 1970 based on the design of Ernest Vandestrate. The displays on this museum include countless 19th and 20th century etchings, paintings, and sculptures created by the residents of Mons and the Hainaut province. Tourists can visit the museum from Tuesdays to Saturdays at 12pm to 6pm and on Sundays at 10am to 6pm. read more
