Freeport Travel Guide, Bahamas
The city of Freeport is one of the very few cities in the country of Bahamas which is actually a free trade zone (FTZ) or the so called export processing zone (EPZ). The city of Freeport is situated on the famous island called as Grand Bahama. The city of Freeport is situated around 160 kilometers from Fort Lauderdale which is part of Florida. The city of Freeport is also a district for the country of Bahamas.
Although during its initial years the city of Freeport used to stretch over an area of around 200 kilometer square but in last couple of decades the city of Freeport has increased its area of expansion to around 560 kilometer square. It was a agreement signed somewhere in the year 1955 when the government of Bahamas agreed to charge no tax on the business which will be conducted in the city of Freeport. This rule will stay in effect till the year 2054 and till then no one will have to pay taxes for the business that he / she runs in the city of Freeport. The free trade zone is under the control of Grand Bahama Port Authority (which is also known as GBPA in short).
As per the census of year 2000 the population for the city of Freeport was around 27000 inhabitants which is actually very huge when compared to its population in its older years. The reason behind the jump in population was due to the free trade zone tag which was given to city in the year of 1955. This tag attracted many businessmen in the city and hence the population for the city of Freeport jumped up.
The city of Freeport is for those people who love to read books. There are two government funded public libraries in the city of Freeport. The names of these libraries are the Charles Hayward Library (which was started by a group of volunteers and as of today too it is being governed by volunteers) and the Grand Bahama Public Youth Library. You can be rest assured that you will find the book that you are looking for in on these two libraries.
The city of Freeport is also famous as a tourist hot spot and it experiences around 1 million tourists that hit the city of Freeport every passing year.
