Brisbane, Australia is the capital city of Queensland and the largest in the state. It’s also the third largest city in the country. It can be found next to the Brisbane River. The locals call it Mian-jin, which means “place that is shaped as a spike.” Brisbane was named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, who was the New South Wales Governor at the beginning of the 19th century. Citizens of Brisbane are often called Brisbanites.
Brisbane’s economy is a mixture of blue and white collar businesses. Information technology, higher education, financial services all make up the white collar world. These businesses are usually located in the central business district. The blue collar businesses are include metalwork shops, railroad shops, petroleum refineries, and paper mills. Most of these types of businesses are located down on the river.
However, there is another industry that is booming in Brisband and that is tourism. There are activities in Brisbane that will appeal to almost anyone. Music has a large place in the culture of the city. Popular and classical music are both well received here.
There are a number of theater companies and a ballet that hold regular performances here. In 2007, Brisbane was named as one of the top musical hotspots by Billboard magazine. For those of you that prefer the art-world, you find the largest modern art gallery in Australia here. Andy Worhal exhibition is one of the largest known collections of his work.
For the nature lover, you’ll find over 27 km of cycling trails, as well as many parks and gardens. You can take a tour into the ‘outback’ or stay in civilization. For those that won’t venture out of the city, you’ll also find many clubs and bars, as well as shopping centers and malls. The possibilities for having a good time here are endless.
