Amata - Overview

In Roman mythology, Amata was the wife of King Latinus of the Latins. Although Latinus and she had no sons, together they had one daughter. When her daughter, Lavinia, was given to Aeneas for marriage in spite of her fiancé, Turnus, Amata supported Turnus. When it became clear that Aeneas would win her daughter, Amata committed suicide.

Appears in Aeneid, Book VII, line(s) 343, and also Book XII, lines 56 and 593
