The capital city of Adelaide is the most densely inhabited city among South Australia’s states with a population of more than 1.1 million. It is also Australia’s fifth largest city. This coastal city lies north of the Fleurieu Peninsula on the Adelaide Plains.

Major government and financial institutions are located in Adelaide, as it is South Australia’s commercial hub and seat of government.

Economy

Adelaide’s main economic industries include manufacturing, defense technology and research, export and service industries. International car manufacturing plants like General Motors Holden and Mitsubishi are located in Adelaide. There are also several medical industry and electronics production plants in the city area.

Adelaide is also home to SANTOS or South Australia Northern Territory Oil Search, the country’s largest oil company as well as Cooper’s, a famous South Australian brewery.

Adelaide constitutes a large percentage of Australia’s defense industries. Seventy percent of the country’s defense companies, including research and technology institutions are in Adelaide.

The city is also benefiting from the area’s huge deposits of minerals like opals and gold. Raw materials like copper, iron and supply of natural gas have contributed to the development of the manufacturing and heavy industry.

The fertile plains provide abundant crops like wheat and fruits and are also good for livestock, which plays a major role in Adelaide’s wool industry.

Adelaide is also known as Australia’s wine capital. The country’s supply for wine exports come from this region and several distinct wineries are located in Adelaide.

The tourism industry is also thriving in Adelaide. More visitors are coming to this sublime and charming city and discovering its many attractions.

Transportation

Due to its central location, Adelaide is a strategic transport center for the country’s transport routes. There is Adelaide Metro that is not an elaborate public transport system and it consists of contracted bus systems. The city was then famous for its historic well-defined layout and wide roads. But these infrastructures are now considered inadequate with the ever increasing city population.

The Adelaide International Airport is the country’s most advanced air transport terminal. Located in west of Adelaide, the terminal has high technology features and serves international and domestic flights every year.

The Parafield Airport is the city’s second airport and is now used for local and general aviation.

Education

The South Australian Government and different educational institutions are developing Adelaide to be the country’s educational center.

The city also has its high ranking list of public and private universities- the University of Adelaide, Australia’s third oldest university; the University of South Australia and Flinders University; the Carnegie Mellon, the first foreign university; the Heinz School Australia; Cranfield University; and, the Entertainment Technology Centre. St. Peter’s College is a notable secondary school that is placed third among the world’s prominent secondary schools.

Sports

The major professional sports famous in Adelaide include Australian Rules Football, soccer and cricket.  Adelaide has two official Australian Football League Teams, the Adelaide Crows and the Port Adelaide Power.  The capital’s professional soccer team is the Adelaide United, with their home ground at the Hindmarsh Stadium. The Southern Redbacks is Adelaide’s official cricket team.

The city’s sporting events are held at the AAMI Stadium or the Adelaide Oval. The Memorial Drive Park hosts major tennis events and tournaments.
