With a population of around 13 million inhabitants, the city of Buenos Aires has the highest population when compared to rest of the cities in Argentina. It is also the capital of Argentina and an important tourist hot spot in the country of Argentina.
The very first name of Buenos Aires was Ciudad de Nuestra Señora Santa María del Buen Ayre which was given to this city in early 1536. Pedro de Mendoza was the leader of a Spanish expedition that had entered the city of Buenos Aires during this period. It was Pedro de Mendoza himself who gave this city the lengthy name of Ciudad de Nuestra Señora Santa María del Buen Ayre.
The land on which today the city of Buenos Aires is located was abandoned by the settlers due to internal revolts in the year of 1541. By 1580, another settlement founded by Juan de Garay came into being on this land. This second settlement gave the city the name of Holy Trinity and only the port of this city was called Buenos Aires. This name remained for the previous 20 years but in this period somehow the name Buenos Aires won and the city was called Buenos Aires instead of Holy Trinity.
The British army tried twice to enter the city of Buenos Aires during the years of 1806 and the year 1807. Both times, they had to face losses against the local army. By 1810, the locals of Buenos Aires revolted against the Spanish rule and this was the time when a local government was established in the city of Buenos Aires. May 25 was the day when this local government was established in the city of Buenos Aires. Since then, May 25 has been marked as the Independence Day for the city of Buenos Aires. Officially, the Spanish Army left the city of Buenos Aires in 1816.
The city of Buenos Aires was also the capital city for the historical state of Buenos Aires somewhere during 1853 to 1860. Between 1880 and 1940 the city of Buenos Aires experienced exponential growth in terms of economy.
