Is Travel Insurance necessary?
I was really thinking if it is needed to have a travel insurance before traveling, is it?

Some sorts of travel insurance yes. Better to be safe than sorry :-)

It also depends on how long you'll be away, where and what you're gonna do while being away.

It can be gigantic sums for flight transport home when being ill, so that's when an insurance comes in very handy.

For us in Sweden, when booking by travel agents, they usually offer us extra insurances which I don't think is necessary if we got an home insurance or pay with a VISA card, which both has built in travel insurance that is enough for normal (shorter than 45 days) trips.

However, if you're going to do some sport activities, you'd better check up that your travel insurance will cover that kind of activities.

As with all kind of insurances, we need to really read ALL the text in the insurance policy and yet, we can't be totally sure how they will handle our case when something has happened....

I think anyone that ever lost his bag full of valuable stuff will not board another plane without insurance ever again :P

For me, it depends where I'm travelling to really.

In the last year on the way to Berlin my luggage was broken by the workers of the Schoenefeld airport. I flew with a low-cost airline company, namely EasyJet; I don't want to blame them but I think there must be a connection, I don't think the same thing would have happened if I were flying on Lufthansa’s first class. It's not such a big problem, I'm still using that suitcase and I just wanted to share what happened.

After I seized my luggage was broken I went to the right section of the airport (after I checked out) and made a report - the lady from there was really kind, but the process would have been very elaborate. Here is what I should have done: after I came home, get the suitcase to repair, if possible, if not, get a certificate that it can’t be repaired, change the suitcase and fax them the bill. After that, they might have sent money, but that was not sure. Of course I didn't do this, anyway I don't know whether such thing as luggage repairing company even exists and I think most of travelers don’t complain and waste time on things like that, even if they have insurance. On the other hand, if anything happens, it’s good to have insurance. But one must always read the details, for instance, if the insurance covers the price of the hotel room if the flight is canceled and other things like this.
