The city of Sibiu is the capital of Sibiu County in Romania and in 2007 it won the title of the Cultural Capital of Europe. The city used to be the center of the Saxons in the heart of the Carpathians.

Sibiu, Romania - Architecture

The old city center provides plenty amazing examples of the Protestant Saxon architecture. The narrow streets, where visitors can still walk on the original cobbled roads and the huge and wonderful Unitarian Cathedral at the end of the Main Street are only a few of the things that make Sibiu a perfect place for a Romanian vacation.

Sibiu, Romania - Sightseeing and museums

Joseph Bruckenthal was the governor of the county during the blooming of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Brukenthanl Museum complex founded by the governor now wears his name and it is the largest and richest one in the area having sections like the unique and very interesting History of the Pharmacology and the Fine Art section exposing paintings of well known Baroque artists such as the Flemish Jan van Eyck and Anthony van Dyck.

However the most famous sight of Sibiu is the impressive Astra-Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization about 1,5 miles (2 km) near the city.

Sibiu, Romania - Also worth visiting

Sibiu is surrounded by mountains and forests that are perfect spots for a weekend in nature. The Trans-Fagarasean gateway is not far from the city, it crosses the Carpathians linking Sibiu County with Arges County and it is the highest way in the country going up high to 2400 meters on a serpentine.

Therefore, Sibiu became the headquarters of the Romanian National Party and the of ‘Memorandum’ movement. In the second half of the 19th century, Sibiu experienced an unprecedented growth: new neighborhoods were being built; there was... Read more »
