Museum of Folk Civilization in Sibiu, Romania
Sibiu – ASTRA Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization – How to get there?
The city of Sibiu is the capital of Sibiu County situated in north to the Southern-Carpathians, in the heart of Romania. The Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization lies 1.5 miles (2 km) near the city. The museum is approachable via train or on the E68 and E81 international routes that passes through the city.
Sibiu – ASTRA Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization – Overview
There is a wonderful landscape in the forest near the city, giving place to the ASTRA Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization, the largest open-air museum in Romania having a total of 96 ha (237 acres). This immense territory includes two distinct exhibitions, the open-air ethnographic museum and the exhibition of modern wood sculpture, two different worlds meeting on the same place in perfect harmony. There is a 6 ha (15 acres) lake in the middle of the museum that mirrors the floating bridges and the windmills surrounding the lake.
The museum exposes traditional houses from all over the country, from Transylvania to the Danube Delta. Tools and machineries linked to the traditional crafts are also exposed, wind- and watermills, wine presses, butter churns just like some of the first threshers in Romania. My personal favorite was a wooden merry-go-round and a colored chariot especially for the transport of brides on their wedding day.
Sibiu – ASTRA Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization – How much does it cost?
The museum is opened all week, except for official holydays. Tickets for adults cost 15 lei (app. 5 $), tickets for children and students cost 4 lei (app. 1.2 $) but there is extra charge for night visiting (from 19:00 to 03:00).

Recommended Sibiu Guide
Located on a hill not far from the Cibin River, the old city of Sibiu is formed by the Upper Town, which offers great opportunities for sightseeing and exploring what once used to be the wealthier part of the medieval city, the Lower Town, serving as the industrial zone with modern buildings. The most impressive passage linking the two sides of the city is The Passage of the Stairs, leading down to the Lower Town, which descends along the city’s fortification under its support arches. The historical city is beautifully organized around three city squares and a network of narrow streets, most of the sites of major interest being located... Read more »
