I was very disappointed to see uncollected garbage piled on many of the city streets of this otherwise pretty city. It smells badly and is a health hazard. Friends who live there told me this has been going on for a long time. There seems there is no community will to do anything about it. One morning I saw a dead cat next to one of these refuse mountains. Later in the afternoon the animals was still there, buzzing with flies. I really can't imagine such a situation going on at long as this one has in anywhere else. It is really boggling. My recommendation is to skip Gythion. Maybe if tourism declines the town fathers will be forced to deal with the garbage problem.

During the 4th Crusade, in 1204, Thessaloniki became a fief of the Latin Empire, and it continued to change hands until the first half of the 15th century, when it came under Ottoman rule. The city became the home of Europe’s largest Jewish population; an attempt of the Ottoman’s to... Read more »
