(about Cilacap, Indonesia, last edited on Feb 02, 2004)

Cilacap (old spelling: Tjilatjap) is a sea port on the southern coast of the island of Java, Indonesia. It is part of the province of Central Java.

The port is one of only a few that exist on the southern coast that can service shipping of reasonable tonnage. The nearest safe anchorage east is Pacitan. The city's harbor is protected by Nusa Kambangan, an island best known as the site of several prisons.

During World War II it was a major departure point to Australia for people fleeing the Japanese invasion, either by boat or sea-plane.

It is visited by many ships for National or International trade transportation. The city's Tunggul Wulung Airstrip has scheduled flights to Jakarta

Cilacap town offers several Banyumasan tourist attractions.

Coordinates: 7°44′S 109°0′E
