- Bass Hill (Australia)
by trusted-source

(about Bass Hill, Australia, last edited on Feb 02, 2004)

Bass Hill is a suburb in the south-west of Sydney, Australia. It is part of the Local Government Area of Bankstown and its postcode is 2197. Bass Hill is home to the Dunc Gray velodrome that was used for track cycling events during the 2000 Olympic Games.

History

The suburb is named after George Bass, a surgeon and explorer who was granted land in 1798. He had discovered the area nearby during his expedition on the Georges River with Matthew Flinders in 1796.

The area developed rapidly after the completion of Liverpool Road in 1814. Originally known as Irish Town and later, Upper Bankstown, the name Bass Hill was officially given in October 1924. In about 1975, the area became known as Bass Hill.
