Alajuela is the capital city of Costa Rica's Alajuela province. Located in the San José metropolitan area, 220,000 live in this important city. It is the birthplace of Juan Santamaría, national hero of Costa Rica. Juan Santamaría International Airport (main airport serving San José) is located about 3 km outside the city.

The LD Alajuelense football club is based here.
