Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands

by lindamura

(about Road Town, British Virgin Islands, last edited on Sep 16, 2008)

After Tortola, Virgin Gorda is the second in the British Virgin Islands, situated at 41km (26 miles) east of St. Thomas and at19km (12 miles) of Tortola. The island has a length of 16km.

There is a difference between the north and the south of Virgin Gorda. The southern coast presents large boulders that incorporate in the flatness of the landscape. The northern coast is mountainous; here you can see Gorda Peak, the highest on the island with 417m (1,370 ft.).

You can get to Virgin Gorda  from one of the other islands. There is an airport in Spanish Town has its own airport, but you can also make use of the ferry. You can take the tour of Virgin Gorda by car taking the road that goes along the rocky coast from the southwest to the northeast. There are also open-sided safari buses.

During Christopher Columbus second voyage to the New World in 1493, he gave the island the name of Virgin Gorda, or "Fat Virgin," because its shape looked like a fat woman laid-back.

The island was an agricultural community but began to develop when Laurence Rockefeller came here in 1964.

One of the biggest attractions in Virgin Gorda is the Baths. A unique, natural phenomenon of exotic pools and grottos made by huge boulders is much appreciated by tourists.

Belonging to the renowned ‘Beach Coast’, Savannah Bay is a long, white beach with a great reef nearby making it great for water sports.

Spring Bay is among the nicest beaches with powder sand and clear waters. The sea changes color and mood, one day it is calm the other there can be huge waves, but this diversity does not hold tourists back.

Trunk Bay is a beach of white sand, a paradise where you can get only by boat.

Devil’s Bay is similar in beauty but calmer and offers a great white sand beach to lie on and great waters for snorkeling.

Virgin Gorda hosts North Sound known all around the world for the sailing opportunities it offers.

Bitter End is a "nautical village" with shore side accommodations, three restaurants, lots of facilities and a great number of activities ranging from hiking to swimming.
