Vail, CO, United States

(about Vail, CO United States, last edited on Dec 11, 2007)

Vail is a very popular ski resort located at 109 miles West of Denver. Lots of Europeans and Americans love it not only for its natural beauty but also for its restaurants, shops and lodgings. The sensational mountain and the endless possibilities of having fun are also to be noted.

It wasn’t always like this and the person that contributed to the development of the resort in becoming what it is today is Peter Siebert. He encouraged the development of the ski area in White River National Forest and the results didn’t seize to come, tourists flocked the resort and their number encouraged the locals to develop the resort even further making it one of the largest one in the country.

Another important fact that helped Vail be what it is today was the numerous draughts that triggered forest fires. These misfortunes were seen later as great opportunities to create open areas for skiing and snowboarding.

Another fancy ski resort is Beaver Creek where skiers of all levels can practice their favorite sport. The king sport is skiing, but there are other activities to pursue like: golf, fishing, mountain-biking, hot air ballooning and horse back riding making it an all year attraction. Besides the numerous outdoor activities there is also a thriving classy night scene with popular piano bars.

Vail is also popular for its nightlife and one of the most visited bars in town is the Tap Room where, as its name suggests, there are plenty of drinks on offer and you can get a large variety of beers and great martinis. There is also the Sanctuary, the Club, the Red Lion, Vendetta’s (this one is mainly frequented by ski patrollers). So between Bridge Street and Hanson Ranch Road north over Gore Creek, there’s all the excitement.

One of the best places to hang out in the winter season is the 8,150, a suggestive name for the place as it is located at this elevation. Here you can spend your nights listening to some live music while other venues cater to sports lovers who can watch their favorite team on large screen TVs.

During the summer the tourists can’t complain that there aren’t as many activities around as during winter season as summer is also an important season to attract tourists. Among the cultural events we mention a favorite of those who like classical music, the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival when great performers of various classical styles amaze the audience. Among the big performers we mention the Dallas Symphony, the New York Philharmonic and the Rochester Philharmonic.

And if we mentioned festivals, there is another one that should be mentioned: The Vail International Dance Festival when you can see some exquisite Russian ballet performance.
Those who fancy other styles also have what to choose from as Vail Valley Foundation is the venue featuring jazz, blues and rock concerts.

Besides entertainment, the summer season offers outdoor activities to keep the tourists happy and trained. They can continue having fun in Vail with activities like mountain-biking and hiking on about the same trails while Piney River Ranch offers activities like wagon rides, horseback rides, a canoeing and fishing.

With activities for every season and every taste and level, Vail is one of the most popular resort in the country, a resort suitable for everyone, but it is representative especially for the winter activities.
