Campitello, Val di Fassa, Italy

(about Campitello, Italy, last edited on Nov 23, 2007)

The name of the location, Campitello, derives from the Ladin word Ciampedel which means open space, free from vegetation and plants.

The symbol of the resort are the mountain goats.

Located in the northernmost part of the Aviso river valley at the mouth of Val di Duron and dominated by the wonderful dolomite faces of the Sassolungo, Campitello is a typical small village where the comfort and relaxation are at home, an important winter and summer resort. Because of its strategic location the name of Campitello has become synonymous with alpinism and there is a great Alpinistic Center.

It is also here that you will find some of the best climbers and best guides for the whole Val di Fassa area. Luigi Rizzi, one of the greatest climbers of the Dolomites was born here and he was the one to know and explore all the dangerous climbs.

Once a mountain village where people’s main activity was to work at the water mills, Campitello of today is a highly touristy place where people come throughout the year to enjoy the splendors of the Dolomiti Mountains. Campitello’s history is tightly bound to the unforgettable deeds of Val di Fassa mountaineering.

History is palpable in the ancient hamlet of Pian, where in summer the scent of freshly baked bread gets in the air and passes among the ancient mountains farm houses.

The main activity during the warm seasons is taking long walks in Val Duron where you can trace the history of Pian. You can also take advantage of the cable car network that is part of the Dolomiti Superski skiing circuit that offers tens of km of skiing slopes meant to keep you on skis for as long as possible. You can ski all day without having to take off your skis. Ski lifts in Campitello lead to the ski slopes of the Col Rodella of 2404 m, and from there you can go to Sasso Piatto and many other spots as the network of paths, roads and cableways link all of them. The scenery is breathtaking especially from Col Rodella.

Great skiing is guaranteed by the modern ski-lifts on an up-to-date snow covering system.

There is a well equipped sportive centre close to Campitello cableway station. Here you can practice climbing, hockey, basketball, soccer, golf and tennis. Among other activities you can consider daily hand-gliding and paragliding. The area is also known for its geography, geology and botany.

Unlike its neighbouring resort Canazei, Campitello is not a huge resort but it has some attractions. Among them there is the Ss. Filippo and Giacomo Gothic church dating 1525 with 15th century frescos and the only one with a belfry tower. There are some bars to hang around and a disco for those in favor of dancing. There are a few good restaurants where you can taste some delicious local specialties.

Campitello still maintains it original charm but it also offers modern facilities and a great mountain experience being linked to everything the mountains have to offer.
