Grand Turk Island

(about Grand Turk Island, Bahamas, last edited on Jul 25, 2007)

Located 30 miles south of the Bahamas, the island is one of the many islands from the British Crown Colony that numbers 40 islands. It is the most important of the 40 because it is the government seat for the colony. It has 3,700 residents that enjoy some 350 days of sunshine per year and a mild climate that makes it a perfect year round destination. Its fine beaches, snorkel sites, excellent diving opportunities and the crystal clear water makes it a popular stop.

You will feel quite at ease here as the main language spoken is English and U.S. dollar is the official currency.

The activities both on water and on land abound. The island is interesting to visit and among the attractions you can see the historic down town area of Cockburn Town that hosts a great variety of historic buildings and other places of historic significance like the Columbus' landing site. Wildlife watching at the natural lagoon is a much appreciated activity. Off land the water based activities abound and there’s plenty of wildlife watching here, too among which we can mention whale watching.

Grand Turk Island is definitely a stop worthwhile.

Another atop along the route in an East Caribbean tour is Half Moon Cay, part of Little Salvador Island.  Once a refuge for the pirates,  Half Moon Cay is a  pretty tropical unspoilt island where you can really feel like you are in paradise, a tourstised paradise though that offers its tourists all the necessary facilities for having a great time: private beachside, children's aqua park, plenty of bars, shops, ice cream shop and frozen drink bar, a casual wear shop, a straw market, post office, first aid station and a chapel. They are all within easy, walking distance.

Children will have a great time here as they have definitely been taken into consideration when the playground called "Club HAL, “was built.

Being a significant nesting area for waterfowl, wildlife watching is very good here. Water based activities are numerous: fishing, watercraft adventures, personal watercraft course, swimming attracting all water sports enthusiasts. The place where you can get equipment to rent and information is The Watersports Center near the Welcome Plaza.

You will be able to enjoy all the activities as liners usually stop here for a day. It is also an attraction for wildlife lovers and for all who would like to see a locals free island. If you think of having a bite here head towards the Food Pavilion for a lunch in a relaxing and pleasant atmosphere. Both islands offer a great variety of activities for all tastes.
