Rio de Janeiro has one of the most intriguing views in the world. The Surroundings are exceptional

Rio de Janeiro is clearly one of the most exciting cities in world, but it also has a reputation for being a bit pricey. Brazil is one of the most expensive countries in South America, and Rio being its chief tourist destination, prices are bound to be on the high side. But fortunately for budget travelers, it’s not impossible to visit Rio de Janeiro on a budget, on the contrary.

The Cidade Maravilhosa has lots of free attractions, and if you keep in mind a few tricks, you won’t run low on funds during your trip – like check many airlines, aggregators and flight search engines to find the cheapest flight to Rio de Janeiro.

    Accommodation

Part of your travel fund is probably going to be spent on accommodation, unless you happen to have friends in Rio. You can go with the most budget-saving option and camp instead of staying at a hotel. If you don’t mind being a bit far from the city center, you should consider camping at the Clube do Brasil camping ground, located in Barra da Tijuca district, right next to the Macumba beach (the beach is beautiful and also a great surfing spot).

If you want a more solid roof over your head, you could stay at a hostel, like Ipanema Beach House for example. But if you are planning on staying more than a couple of weeks, you might want to rent an apartment and share with others.

    Eating

Rio has some great restaurants, but many of them are quite expensive as well. However, street food is usually the best food you can taste during your travels, and in Rio this rule definitely applies. Office workers often eat at so-called per kilo (porquilo) buffet restaurants, where you choose your food from the buffet and pay for the weight (it’s a great way to try as many foods as you can).

Bars are also a good place to find inexpensive and filling meals, if you don’t mind the fixed menu. If you don’t want a full meal, grab a sandwich from a juice bar like the popular Polis Sucos which has stands on most of the popular beaches.

    Sights of Rio de Janeiro

The beaches of Rio are some of its most amazing attractions, and luckily they are all free. But if you are yearning for some culture, you can visit most of the museums in the city for free on certain days (check their hours or ask when’s the free admission), and you can visit the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil for free anytime.

    Nightlife

Many of the nightclubs in Rio have an admission fee, but you might be able to pick up some flyers at boutiquues or stands and pay only half of the fee (so keep an eye out for flyers of every sort). If you just want to have some beers and chill in the evening, why not try one of the local botecos, or small neighbourhood bars, where drinks are cheaper then in clubs, and sometimes you’ll be treated to live music too.
