The price of gas is going up, and driving holidays are not as popular as they used to be, but if you have some money saved up and a car that won’t cause you any trouble on a longer trip, missing out on the experience of a true roadtrip would be a shame indeed.

A driving holiday channels a feeling of adventure and freedom that few other kinds of travel experiences can offer. And if the road is scenic, then there should be nothing to stop you from enjoying it. So fill up your tank, grab some CD’s with music for the road, and pick one of the top 5 driving holidays.

    The Amalfi Coast, Italy

There is no question that the Amalfi Coast is one of the most scenic stretches of coast in Europe, if not in the entire world. Rocky terraced hillside is dotted with tiny pastel villages on one side of the road, and the blue sea on the other. You can stop in any village on your way and take a cuisine break (taste the local fruit, wine and specialties), or if you find a strip of beach, maybe even take a dip. The coast is popular with bikers as well as drivers, especially around the villages of Ravello, Positano and Amalfi.

    Banff and Jasper, Canada

Banff and Jasper National Parks in Canada are two of the most breathtakingly beautiful corners of the northern hemisphere, and they are close enough to each other to be just perfect for a roadtrip through the Canadian Rockies.

Highway 93, also known as well as Icefield Parkway connects the two parks. In the summer months, the parkways is quite busy with other tourists, but if you want to take a good look at the surrounding landscape, there’s no need to hurry anyway.

    Provence, France

Provence covers quite a substantial chunk of France, and it has pieces of both the French Riviera and the French Alps. Although the region is made up of roughly seven different departments, there is a cultural unity to Provence that has been existing since Roman times. Provence is known for its lavender fields, and you can also see some interesting chateaus and even some Roman aqueducts. Also, Provencal cuisine is a must try.

    Pacific Coast Highway, California

The US practically invented the roadtrip, so if you want a traditional trip with a bit of spice on top, try the Pacific Coast Highway in California. Start your journey in Los Angeles and pass through California, Oregon and Washington. Stop in the cities of La Jolla, Malibu, Santa Monica, Pismo, Santa Barbara and Venice, and enjoy some of the best beaches of the world.

    Rhine Valley, Germany

Some of the most opulent and fantastic castles in Europe can be found in the Rhine Valley in Germany, as well as many medieval towns. If you are in the mood for a bit of realistic fairytale-like region, start in Cologne and head towards Mainz. Don’t miss Lorelei, the legendary rock on the bank of the Rhine near St. Goarshausen.
