  • Top 5 cheesy tourist attractions in Europe

When visiting something for the first time, there are some unwritten rules that most people choose to obey. No matter how well known, boring or downright cheesy, some tourist attractions simply must be seen, even if you feel like you know them already.

Otherwise, you will have less to boast of when you return home. It might seem like a waste of precious holiday time, but imagine returning home from Paris and telling everyone that you haven’t seen the Eiffel Tower, or that you didn’t even glance in the direction of the Louvre. Well, if you want to avoid this rather unpleasant situation, check out this list of absolutely cheesy tourist attractions that you absolutely have to visit.

    L’Aquarium de Barcelona, Spain

For some reason, people are really keen on visiting the Aquarium when they go to Barcelona. It is the largest aquarium in Europe, I’ll grant you that, and there are some interesting species swimming around in the 21 tanks, but it seem kind of redundant to me to visit an aquarium when you are in Barcelona, the city of Gaudi buildings and other magnificent things. But if you have time to kill in Barcelona and you have nothing else to do, it might be interesting to visit the Aquarium after all. And if you are a fan of aquatic life, I retract all of the above words.

    The Acropolis, Athens, Greece

When you think of Athens, you can’t help but picture the Acropolis, and there’s nothing more natural. Acropolis is one of the most prized possessions of the city, and even if it’s cheesy, I can’t help but recommend it to you if you are visiting Athens for the first time.

The Acropolis makes it easier than ever to see why the Greek were considered such a great civilization. If you ask me, any sky-scraper can cower in shame when it comes to competing with the Acropolis in terms of impressiveness.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa, Pisa, Italy

The Leaning Tower is an impressive building, don’t get me wrong. But every time someone visits it, they inevitably come home with pictures of them ‘pushing’ the tower. I suspect that the fame of the Pisa tower is based less on its architecture, and rather on the it being a useful prop for pictures (which I completely understand).

When you visit the tower, there will probably be more people taking pictures of it than actually visiting it. Ironically, the looming Cathedral of Pisa overshadows the tower both in size and impressiveness.

    The Eiffel Tower, Paris, France

It is inconceivable to visit Paris without seeing the Eiffel Tower, which is as much a symbol of the city as any other attraction. It is one of the best known tourist attractions in the world, so of course you have to see it when in Paris.

The tower has an observation platform which offers some rather fetching views of the city, and there are a couple of restaurants at the top too. Having a delicious French dinner while the lights of Paris sprawl underneath you is rather impressive in my book, so no matter how cheesy it is, the Eiffel Tower is a must see attraction.

    The London Dungeons, London, UK

If cheesy means large crowds at all times of the year, then yes, the London Dungeons are overrated, but personally, I would visit them in a blink. Those who have an inclination towards the macabre and gruesome side of history will really enjoy themselves here. There’s a section where you can learn some creepy details about the Great Fire of London, and another where you will be taken back to the times of Jack the Ripper’s horrible murders. What’s not to love about the place?
