  • Top 10 places to see in South America

    Bolivia

    Bolivia

Unless you have a lot of time and money on your hands, there’s no way you can visit South America all at once. It’s large, it’s beautiful, and there are so many places to see that a few years are probably not enough. But what if you want to get the gist of it first, and then explore it more leisurely and in detail?

Well, if you’re traveling to South America for the first time and you’re not sure where to go, we’ve compiled a list of the ten most amazing places in South America. No hidden, secluded destinations, just the mainstream tourist attractions that are easy to reach. Visit these spots, and then you’ll be ready for more risky adventures!

    1. The Amazon River

The Amazon is definitely the most famous river in the whole world, and although it might seem a bit dangerous, if you have a snake-bite kit and and a mosquito spray, you’ll be fine :D. There are several travel companies offering Amazon cruises and tours, and unless you are a wo(man) of the jungle, don’t go off into the Amazonian rainforest on your own.

    2. Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands are considered wonders of nature, because they are the home of many species of plants and animals that you can’t find anywhere else in the world. You can only visit the islands through a guided tour, and you’re not allowed to stray off the paths, but it’s an inspiring experience nonetheless.

    3. Iguazu Falls

Located on the border of Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina, this world heritage site is possible one of the most beautiful falls in the world (some people claim that it makes even Niagara look ugly). It is easy to reach by bus from Foz do IguaƧu (Brazil), Puerto Iguazu (Argentina) and even Ciudad del Este in Paraguay, although this is the worst option of the three.

    4. Nazca Lines

The immense drawings etched into the desert surrounding the Peruvian town of Nazca are one of the unsolved mysteries of archaeology. Fact is, they are really old, and much larger than they seem in pictures. So in order to get a good look at them, you need to book a flight, but if you prefer not to fly, you can see three of the figure from the observation tower on the Panamerican Highway.

    5. Macchu Picchu

Macchu Picchu might seem like one of those overrated destinations that everybody visits only because they’re famous, but this ancient Inca city is even more beautiful in real life than in those National Geographic pictures. You can take a daytrip from Cuzco, or stay overnight at Aguas Calientes, where you can have a relaxing soak at the hot springs.

    6. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Rio is probably the best city in South America, where you can be part of the iconic beach culture for a while, visit the museums, explore the harbor (and don’t forget to climb to the top of the Sugar Loaf). If yo happen to visit Rio during the carnival, you won’t have time to visit all of these things, but you definitely will have the time of your life.

    8. The Salt Flats of Uyuni

salar de uyuniSouth America is home to some incredible places, so weirdly exceptional that they look like landscapes from another planet. Such a place is Uyuni, whose glistening salt flats and multicolored lakes are a truly special sight. The small town of Uyuni seems like it’s in the middle of nowhere, but it does have an international airport.

    9. La Paz, Bolivia

La Paz is the highest capital of the world, and a great place for a first encounter with Peruvian culture. The entire city is made up of paradoxes: high-rise condos and shabby brick huts, colonial buildings and skyscrapers, traditiona and modernity all in one. There are several very interesting places in La Paz, for example the Witches Market (Mercado de las Brujas), which you should visit in case you want to pick up some llama fetuses or dried frogs (no kidding!).

    10. Buenos Aires

The Argentine capital is perfect for an urban adventure, maybe because some of the most interesting parts of the cities are not exactly the safest too. La Boca, for example, with its cheerfully colorful houses, has quite a high crime rate, but most of the other districts are perfectly safe if you don’t try to get in trouble.
