From the tallest mountains in the world to the most idyllic tropical islands, Asia has it all. The sheer geographical diversity of the continent is incredible, and naturally the scenery can be more beautiful than you thought you could imagine.

So it figures that Asia would be chock full of opportunities for hiking, climbing and trekking, and it’s a wonder that any of the routes are ever free of eager travelers.

Hiking is not all about physical effort and pushing your boundaries, but also about discovering natural wonders small or large, animals, plants and minerals, and getting a bit closer to nature than you were at the start. These trails can do just that and so much more – here are some of the best hiking trails in Asia.

    Tiger Leaping Gorge, Yunnan, China

The Tiger Leaping Gorge Trail is universally recognized as one of the finest trails in the world, replete with natural beauty and small scenic villages scattered along the way. The trail is very popular with tourists, and it doesn’t take a lot of planning or effort to reach the head of the trail.

The trek starts near Qiaotou and officially ends at Walnut Grove, although if your thirst for adventure isn’t sated yet you can continue Daju. The hike is not exactly technically difficult and it takes about two days at a moderate pace, but it is worth taking your time to admire the breathtaking scenery.

    Hong Kong Trail, Hong Kong

Hong Kong Trail is an impressive 50 kilometer route that crosses all the five country parks on the island. The trail might be long, but it is hardly strenuous, and it is well marked.

Most walkers and hikers who hit this trail prefer to walk a section of the route each day, and return home by nightfall, but if you can’t part from the stunning scenery long enough to go back to your hotel, try the camping sites in the area.

Tingri to Mt. Everest Base Camp, Tibet

If you like hikes that take their toll on your muscle, the classic Tingri to Mt. Everest Base Camp, one of the world’s best known hiking trails, will definitely meet your expectations.

The trail is 80 kilometers long, and no walk in the park, so some hiking experience and physical fitness is needed to complete it. If four days of heavy hiking sounds like too much of a good thing, you can also try the much shorter, three hour long trail from Rongbu Monastery to Mt. Everest Base Camp.

    Gunung Rinjani, Lombok, Indonesia

It takes a serious adventurous streak to hike up Gunung Rinjani, a fierce active volcano with incredible scenery in Lombok, Indonesia. The hike to the crater is very challenging, and you need a guide and hiking equipment to reach it, but your rewards are displays of steam, hot lava, hot springs and incredible rock formations.

    Singhalia Ridge Trail, Darjeeling, India

Darjeeling produces some of the finest teas in India, bu it is also home to some of the country’s best hiking trails. Singhalia Ridge Trail winds along the edges of the Himalaya mountains, and briefly crosses into Nepal. There is opportunity for leisurely day hikes as well as more serious hikes of up to five days, with porters and guides arranged in Manebhanjang.
