Some people like to lay out intricate itineraries when they are visiting a city for the first time, carefully planning out routes that cover all the attractions they want to see. Others like to take a more free-style approach to sightseeing, and just wander off wherever their feet take them, even if that sometimes means getting lost in an unknown city.
Interestingly enough, big cities are the best places you can get lost in, because it doesn’t take long to find a bus stop, metro station of maybe a tourist information center that can set you on the right way. So if you like to wander aimlessly in unknown cities on the lookout of interesting sights, here are some of the best big cities to get lost in.
Venice, Italy
Venice might not look like a big city, but what it lacks in actual size, it makes up in sheer, maze-like jumble of streets and canals. Venice is not easy to navigate, but once you get the hang of it, you can manage it quite well.
Rather than an urban jumble, Venice seems more like a living museum, and it’s a pleasure to get lost in it, especially when you end up far from the touristy areas and find yourself nearly alone in some sunlit courtyard.
Varanasi, India
The whole of Varanasi seems like a labyrinth of dark streets, filled with temples, sweet shops and stalls, so mesmerizing that you can keep walking from street to street without even realizing that you’ve got utterly lost. Luckily, the many rickshaw drivers in the city will be able to point you into the right direction.
Tokyo, Japan
Tokyo is huge, and getting lost in it would be downright hazardous if it weren’t so easy to get found too. The Japanese capital has several important landmarks that you might recognize, and a very extensive system of public transport, so when you’ve been sufficiently dazed by the neon lights, just jump on a train and head home.
Manila, Philippines
Manila is practically teeming with jeepneys, one of the most creative means of public transport – US military jeeps flamboyantly painted. If you want to get lost in the city, just get off a jeepney at a random stop, and explore the maze of narrow streets and alleys. To get home, ask jeepney drivers for their routes and switch jeepneys until you get where you want.
