  • Weird and wonderful abandoned buildings in Asia

Abandoned buildings might be regarded as useless by some people, and maybe a few abandoned buildings have indeed outlived their purpose. However, some of them become something similar to a work of art, testimonies of times long past. Some people make a hobby out of ‘hunting’ abandoned buildings.

Asia is full of buildings like this, and they vary a lot depending on country. Here is a list of the most fascinating abandoned buildings in Asia.

The Ryugyong Hotel, Pyongyang, North Korea

If you can manage to get a visa to North Korea, it is interesting to take a look at Ryugyong Hotel, one of the tallest buildings in the world. The hotel is not so much abandoned as incomplete, because the construction work was never finished. In 2008, construction was resumed, but it is not known when the building will be completed.

It was to be an emblem of North Korea’s power and glory, and it was added to stamps and postcards while it was only half finished, but the lack of funds and the poor quality of the construction materials hindered the plan.

    Pod City,  San Zhi, Taiwan

This abandoned town looks like something out of a sci-fi novel, and I don’t think there’s anything similar anywhere else on the planet. The town was built in the 70’s, and it was supposed to be a luxury holiday resort, but the buildings proved to be too fragile for the climate.

According to rumours, the town was abandoned ater several strange death took place on the premises, and locals now believe that the pod homes are haunted by the spirits of those who died there.

    Agdam, Azerbaijan

Agdam used to be a flourishing city with over 150,000 inhabitants, but during the Armenian occupation of Azerbaijan, it was vandalized and almost completely destroyed. Many of the buildings still stand (although just barely), and they are covered in graffiti. The former inhabitants have fled into other parts of the country, and Agdam is not likely to be ever rebuilt.

Bokor Hill Station, Phnom Bokor, Cambodia

If you’ve watched enough horror movies about abandoned houses, this resort will look very familiar to you. Bokor Hill Station looks like a collection of archetypal haunted houses, with peeling plaster and empty windows.

There used to be a hotel, a casino and royal residences during the French occupation of Cambodia, but the Khmer Rouge have looted and destroyed most of what was left after the French retreated. If you decide to visit this creepy place, do not stray from the beaten path, there are still many unexploded mines in the area!

Opko Land Theme Park, Opko, South Korea

An entire abandoned theme park? Not so much fun as one that’s still working, but creepy enough to satisfy even the most morbid adventurer. The park was abandoned after a child died in an accident on one of the rides.

Nothing was removed from the park, and all the rides are still standing, although they look a bit worse for the wear. It’s not very safe to do anything but look around, so don’t think about trying out the rides unless you are prepared to take the risk of a few broken bones or even worse.
