If you live in a country that spans over several timezones and you can easily take a month long road trip from one border to the other, then it might sound strange to you that there are countries on the planet where you can actually traverse on foot in a reasonable amount of time.

Some countries are so tiny that they would count as a small town in other parts of the world! Although those who like their travel destinations vast and sprawling with lots of space to explore will find it strange, small countries are actually great for shorter (and even longer) holidays. Here are top 5 smallest countries in the world and why you should visit them.

    Vatican City

Vatican is the smallest state in the world, and it doesn’t need much introduction – it is the spiritual center of Catholicism, and currently the only papal state in the world.

There are about 1000 permanent residents in the city, but that doesn’t stop it from having its own soccer team (mostly made up of the Swiss guards, who have dual citizenship). You don’t have to be religious to enjoy the wonderful artistic treasures of the city!

    Monaco

The French Rivera, Monte Carlo, tons of celebrities and even more casinos – that’s what makes Monaco such an exciting (if very expensive) destination. If you can find the budget for it, a visit to Monaco will be one of the most glamorous things you do in your life. Even if you’re not keen on casinos, you’ll find plenty of things to do, like wandering around the old city.

    Nauru

The small island of Nauru used to be called Pleasant Island, a very fitting name for this tiny tropical paradise. The beaches of Nauru are not exactly the sandy type, but the water is quite shallow and there are some very interesting coral reefs for divers and snorkelers. There’s a circular road around the island – you can circle the whole country in a day, even if you’re walking!

    Tuvalu

If your purpose for traveling is to see spectacular, mind-blowing sights, then Tuvalu will prove to be a disappointment.

There are no huge cities to speak of, or any extraordinary geographical features, but if what you are interested in is the general atmosphere of a place and the local culture, then you’ll love Tuvalu. Local traditions are more alive then anywhere else, and the beaches are awesome.

    San Marino

San Marino is the oldest republic in Europe – it was founded in 301 AD by a stonemason named Marinus. Although small, San Marino has several small towns, and a delightful mountainous scenery. The narrow streets of the capital (also called San Marino) are full of interesting turns and twists and small surprises.
