  • Camping tips for families

Camping is great, and there are few travelers who haven’t spent their youth yearning for the next big outing with their families and friends. But now in the age of internet and Xbox, it might be a bit difficult to convince your kids to come without a fuss on your family camping trip, and even more difficult to make it so that they have fun.

But once you convince them, their sense of wonder guarantees that they will find interesting everything, from campfires to critters and even camping food. So here are some camping tips for families, that can help you make your trip more pleasant.

    Preparation

Even if you’re not worries about getting lost when you’re camping on your own, when there are kids with you, you need to be extra careful. Not because something might happen to them, but because they get bored easily, and you don’t want a winy teenager in tow when you’re trying to find the trail on the map. So map out your itinerary before you go camping.

Make sure you pack a sleeping bag as well as a sleeping bag, and enough warm clothes (and extra clothes) to last for a few days, even if your kids are prone to get dirt all over themselves easily. A bit of dirt when you’re camping will not infect your kid with some unknown disease, so don’t worry, but you don’t want them walking around covered in mud either (it doesn’t hurt to pack some wet weather gear either, just in case).

    Activities

The worst camping trip scenario is when the kids get bored and stat sighing for their gadgets (which are better left at home). Keep them busy and entertained with activities that they can only do when in the outdoors. Building the campfire is great to get them into the camping mood, and it will keep them busy and active (send them to collect firewood, for example).

If you’re staying at an organized campground, you might be able to rent equipment for kayaking or canoeing, for example, especially if your kids are old enough for it. Otherwise, you can stick to more traditional activities such as hiking together (buy a nature book and point out various plants and animals you see on your way), play a board game together with the whole family, and set up a stargazing session after dark, with the proper, warm gear, of course. Toasting marshmallow is a must, especially if it’s the first time for your kids (backyard marshmallow roasts don’t count).
