Trinidad and Tobago might not features as prominently in tourist guides as some other Caribbean nations, but this cluster of island is a true (and often neglected) gem.

As one of the most industrialized and wealthy Caribbean countries, Trinidad and Tobago doesn’t need to rely all that much on tourism, which means that there is a lot of virtually unspoilt scenery and even some natural attractions that few people from outside the islands have seen.

Although both Trinidad and Tobago are mixes and jumbles of cultures, the two islands can seem quite different, with Trinidad the financial and industrial center (more cities, more nightlife, more shopping), while Tobago relies more on tourism and its natural beauty. Here are 5 amazing things to do in Trinidad and Tobago.

    Visit a pitch lake

La Brea pitch lake in southwestern Trinidad is the largest natural asphalt deposit in the world, sprawling over 40 hectares and supposedly 75 meters deep. The asphalt of the lake is mined, but the place has also become quite the famous tourist attraction. In the rainy season, rainwater pools form on the surface of the lake, and the locals believe that bathing in these sulfur-rich waters can cure all sorts of maladies.

    Watch leatherback turtles

The rare and wonderful leatherback turtles come to Mathura Beach in Trinidad every year in spring to lay their eggs. Later, when the eggs hatch, you can see the baby turtles wading toward the water to begin their new lives.

There are many conservation groups that offer guided tours, but you can also volunteer for them and see the turtles up close.

    Glass bottomed boat tours

Bucco Reef on the northern coast of Tobago is one of the riches and most colorful coral reefs in the Caribbean, and anyone who likes scuba diving or marine life should pay a visit to the nylon pool, an area of the reef where the water is so shallow and so clear that it looks like nylon, hence the name. If you don’t dive, you can watch the bustle of marine life from a glass bottomed boat.

    Watch the goat races

One of the funniest events to take place in Trinidad and Tobago is the annual Easter goat race, which is far more serious than it sounds. Just like in the case of horse races, the animals are trained and groomed, there are more and less famous stables and owners. Even if you are not betting on any of the participating goats, the race itself is a lot of fun.

    Pre-Lenten Carnival

The the Sunday, Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, Trinidad and Tobago celebrate the Carnival. People don costumes, dance and sing on the street, listen to calypso music and watch the floats.

There are lots of open air parties that time of the year, but that’s not the only way to participate to the carnival – even as a tourist, you can sign up for a band, dress in costume and try to keep up with the locals.
