One of the best feel feelings you can get when traveling is when you’re walking down a busy street, you’re hungry and you suddenly feel a mouthwatering smell coming out of a bakery. Pastries are a great alternative to fast food if you want a quick bite to eat, and the best thing about bakery products is that they are so culture-specific. Sure, croissants and bagels are almost omnipresent, but there are tons of other yummy pastries that you can find only in certain countries. And if you really want to get acquainted with a certain country’s cuisine, you have to dig in deeper into its pastry section. So here’s a list of some of the best bakeries in the world, for the delight of your taste buds.
Tartine Bakery, San Francisco
As it usually happens in American bakeries, you can find all sorts of goodies here from many parts of the world, from French cakes to Italian sandwiches. Their selection of parties is not very large, but what they lack in number they make up in taste. Chocolate eclairs, frangipane, and devil’s food cake are the highlights of the menu. Take a walk morning walk along Guerrero Street, buy a paper bag filled with breakfast goodies from Tartine and enjoy yourself.
Poilâne Bakery, Paris
Lionel Poilâne is famous for inventing a type of delicious round sourdought bread, called a miche, and other less famous but equally delicious pastries. There are actually two Poilâne bakeries in Paris, Lionel Poilâne bakery and Max Poilâne bakery. The two were brothers, and while both bakeries are great, people still debate which one is better. Boulangeries Poilâne is world famous so the prices are most likely a bit steep, but the miche is supposedly worth it. Poilâne is located in the Latin Quarter, so you can combine some sightseeing with bread-munching.
Bagatelle Boutique, London
The name sounds purely French, but the menu contains both French delicacies and hearty English desserts. Bourbon vanilla beans, French chocolate , Normandy Butter and English fresh cream are combined with some psectacular results in this Harrington Road bakery. Bagatelle specializes in cakes rather than buns and croissants, but you can grab a box of macarons and snack on them while visiting Kensigton.
Ginza Kimuraya Bakery, Tokyo
Ginza Kimuraya has been in business for a long time, and it has outposts in Honolulu as well. More than a bakery, the Kimuraya headquarters in Ginza neighbourhood also comprise a bread factory (which produces 120 types of bread, sold on the first floor of the building), a restaurant and a cafe. Kimuraya is famous for its sweet bean paste buns. You can find these bean paste buns (called anpan) all over Japan, but Kimuraya’s are supposed to be some of the best.

Given the cultural mix that is New York, it’s only natural that you can find some amazing bakeries in this city. Actually, there are more bakeries per square kilometre than in any other city. In Andre’s Hungarian Bakery, established in the 70’s, you can find some mouth-watering strudels, danishes, fruit squares and other goodies baked using traditional Hungarian, Austrian and German recipes.
