  • The mysterious Pendle Witch Country in the UK

Pendle Witch Country is an area locate in the Lancashire Pennines, between the north-western edge of Bronte Country (named after the Bronte sisters) and Ribble Valley and the Yorkshire Dales. This place is not what you’d normally call a tourist magnet, despite the fact that there are plenty of things to see.

The mysterious Pendle Witch Country in the UK is like a landscape straight out of a Gothic novel, or maybe one of the Bronte sisters’ books. But the wilderness is not what makes this place special, it is its gruesome history and the attractions related to it.

The history of Pendle Witch Country is maybe a bit obscure, but quite horrific nonetheless. This is the place where the most famous witch trials in British history were held in the 17th century. In 1612, twelve people from the area around Pendle Hill were accused of witchcraft and of murdering ten other people with their evil spells. Of course, they were all hanged except for one, and although this happened quite some time ago, Pendle Hill is still associated with the grim happenings.

There are several very interesting destinations in Pendle Country. Pendle Hill, of course, is one of the first sights that anyone interested in history should see. Around Halloween, the hill is full of people who want to celebrate the creepiest holiday of the year in a place that has creepy associations, and ghost-hunters have also taken to climbing the plateau in the recent years.

Apart from the hill, there are some other sights that you might be interested in. English country life is at its finest in Lancashire, and you can find many a small rural town where you can while away entire days just walking around, visiting the local pubs, enjoying the cuisine and chatting with the locals. One good example is Gisburn, a village near Clitheroe.

Colne is another pretty little town worth visiting, and it is surrounded by smaller settlements that are good for day trips, such as Foulridge,  and Laneshawbridge. Newchurch in Pendle is very close to Pendle Hill and it has some beautiful views, it is crossed by the Pendle Witches Scenic Car Trail, and a number of walks and paths. Visit one of the village shops, called Witches Galore, for Pendle Witches souvenirs and memorabilia.

When it comes to the natural aspect of the area, Pendle Country has a lot to offer. Pendle Hill is great for a hike even if you’re not hunting ghosts, and Wycoller Country Park is one of the prettiest county parks in all of Lancashire.

In the park, you can visit the ruins of Wycoller Hall, the inspiration for Ferndean Manor from Jane Eyre. For some more historical sightseeing, check out Gawthorpe Hall near Padiham, a majestic and well preserved Elizabethan residence.
