Even if you are the kind of hardened backpacker who doesn’t think twice about sleeping under the open sky, you’ve probably dreamed of sleeping in luxury hotels where you’re treated like royalty, where your room has a king-size bed, a minibar stocked with champagne, and room service that’s better than even the fanciest restaurant.

If you’re willing to pay a pretty penny to stay in a place like this, or if you’re merely considering your options for when you’ll win the lottery, here are some of the most famous luxury hotels in Europe.

     Savoy Hotel, London, UK

Richard D’Oyly Carte, a rather successful impresario, built the Savoy in 1889 with the profits from his operas. It was the first luxury hotel in Britain, with electricity in every room, an elevator, and fine dining provided by famous French chefs.

Obviously, it didn’t take long for the hotel to become famous, and to have guests like Frank Sinatra or Marilyn Monroe. The hotel featured in books and films, and has become synonymous with luxury and decadence, so if you are dreaming of the ultimate luxury hotel experience, the Savoy is definitely where you should start.

Shortly after opening in 1928, the Royal Monceau became a magnet for the celebrities of the time: Hemingway, Walt Disney, Coco Chanel, and more recently it hosted illustrious guests like Michael Jackson or Madonna.

This hotel is so glitzy that even its refurbishment was celebrated with a fancy party with live performances, and before being renovated all of its furniture was auctioned for an insane sum. Famous French Philippe Starck oversaw the hotel’s redesign, so you can be sure that it is better than ever.

    Hotel Adlon, Berlin, Germany

It’s to be expected that a hotel built in 1907 with special permission from the German Emperor and located across the street from Brandenburg Gate to be one of the most glamorous hotels in the world. Adlon was among the most famous hotels in Europe between the two World Wars, and its guest list include Charlie Chaplin, Louise Brooks and Marlene Dietrich. After several mishaps, the hotel was demolished by a new and improved copy was opened in 1997.

    Hotel Imperial, Vienna, Austria

Hotel Imperial started out as a city palace for a ducal family, who didn’t like their home very much and sold it to become a luxury hotel. Since 1873, the hotel has been the city’s most prominent five star hotel, and it had many infamous guests over the years, most notably Adolf Hitler (who worked as a handyman at the hotel in his youth) and Mussolini.

Today the hotel is known for nicer things – like its Imperial Tart chocolate truffles (unfortunately not included in the price of the room).

Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, St Moritz, Switzerland

St Moritz has long been the ski resort of choice for the upper crust of Europe, and Badrutt’s Palace Hotel is the kind of place that was designed expressly for the rich, the noble, and the famous. This glitzy hotel manages to look like  supersized Swiss chalet, and has a longs string of awards tied to its name. In addition to the glam of the rooms, the hotel is also famous for its restaurants.
