  • The most beautiful college campuses in the world

College campuses are not only places of learning (as well as fun and parties), but also marvels of past and present architecture. Whether they are new or old, college campuses exert a certain kind of charm over their visitors (especially if these visitors are former students, but not only in that case).

What’s surely true is that education seems like a far more interesting process when it happens in one of these places. So whether you are a prospective student, or just a curious traveler, here are the most beautiful college campuses in the world.

    Oxford University, Oxford, UK

Without a shadow of a doubt, Oxford’s campus is one of the most beautiful university campuses in the world. The university opened in the 11th century, and some of the buildings actually date back to those times. The campus with its many colleges looks more like a labyrinth of cloisters, spires, nooks and crannies than a place for students, who have lots of hiding options in case they decide to skip class.

    Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey

The Ivy league naturally has some stunning architectural examples among its ranks, but Princeton seems like the paradigm for them all. The campus is built in pure collegiate Gothic style, out of gray stone with intricate carvings (some of the carvings depict ivy, unsurprisingly).

The array of beautiful buildings is interspersed with lots of green spaces, plazas and archways.

    college campuses, Dublin, Ireland

Some people say that Trinity is similar to Oxford, but more approachable and closer to the human scale. The Old Library, founded by Queen Elizabeth in 1592, is the oldest building on campus. The rest of the campus was designed over the centuries by some of the best architects in Ireland. If you visit the library, take a look at the famous Book of Kells, which is displayed there.

    Tsinghua University, Beijing, China

Taking a walk on the grounds of Tsinghua University is like being transported into the world of an ancient Chinese painting. The university was established in 1925 on the site of the Qing Dynasty’s royal gardens.

The whole campus is full of scenic little artificial ponds, stone benches and bridges. Some of the buildings are built in the Chinese style, while others are Western-inspired.

    Scripps College, Claremont, California

This small women’s college in California has a peaceful ambiance, and the the architect who designed the campus, Gordon Kaufman, clearly put a lot of thought into how to integrate seamlessly the buildings into the landscape. The campus is peppered with all sorts of trees, most notably liquid amber trees, which turn into a lovely red shade in autumn.
