  • The best movie beaches in the world

I’m sure you’ve seen plenty of movies where the protagonists are lounging on exquisite, sandy beaches ringed with palm trees, tanning and sipping dainty little cocktails. And while many of these beaches just seem too good to be true, they were filmed in real locations, and camera work can do little to completely change the way a place really looks like.

So, good news, because that means that you can visit the exact same beaches that you saw in your favorite movies, even if they (usually) come without the requisite celebrities. So here are the best movie beaches in the world.

    Phi Phi Leh, Thailand

Many people who saw the 2000 movie The Beach were inspired to start backpacking, even if the movie’s depiction of traveler communes on abandoned islands is less than flattering. However, there’s no denying that the landscapes seen in the movie are absolutely breath-taking, and best of all, they are real too. The Phi Phi Leh beach in Thailand was digitally tweaked a little bit, but mostly you’ll find that in real life it looks pretty much like its movie counterpart.

Petit Tabac, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Lesser Antilles

One particularly funny scene in the Pirates of the Caribbean – The curse of the Black Pearl is when the characters played by Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley are dumped on an uninhabited island by the villains.

The beach looks like a strip of white sand with a few palm trees here and there, and it is hard to imagine that an island as beautiful as that would still be inhabited. However, the Petit Tabac beach in St. Vincent and the Grenadines where the scene was filmed, is in fact pretty much empty, and the island itself is uninhabited.

Devil’s Beach, Nanuya Levu Island (Turtle Island), Fiji

I’m sure that there are few people who haven’t see the Blue Lagoon at some point, even if by today’s standard the film is really cheesy (but still enjoyable). The entire island in the Blue Lagoon looks amazing, and especially the beach where Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins frolic for the most part of the film. You can find the Devil’s Beach on Fiji’s Nanuya Levu Island.

    Leo Carrillo Beach, Malibu, California

Karate Kid is one of those films that spawned endless sequels, the most recent of which came out just last year. In the original 1984 movie, there’s a famous film where Pat Morita’s character teaches the ‘karate kid’ the crane posture, with the Pacific ocean in the background. Scenes from films like Inception, The Usual Suspects, Point Break were also shot at Leo Carillo, and besides, the beach is great for surfing.

Indian Beach, Ecola State Park, Oregon

Although Indian Beach in Oregon looks all windswept and lonesome in Twilight (2008), by now it is probably frequently visited by throngs of teenage fans who want to see the place where Kristen Stewart’s character was angsting about vampires.

The beach seldom has sunny weather, but the scenery is beautiful in a gloomy sort of way. It was also featured in Goonies and Point Break.

My favorite is Goldfinger’s beach (James Bond).

I certainly love Koh Phi Phi, but then Maya Beach, which is really the one where the beach was filmed, is hardly enjoyable these days. The beach is indeed the most beautiful beach I have ever seen, but there are so many boats going there that it’s really not a place to hang out.

    Cheers,
    Peter
